TRR 181 Seminar "A simple reduced order model for eddy saturation" by James Maddison (University of Edinburgh)

The TRR 181 seminar is held every other week in the semester and as announced during semester break. The locations of the seminar changes between the three TRR181 locations, but is broadcastet online for all members of the TRR.

The TRR 181 seminar is held by James Maddison (University of Edinburgh) on May 6, 11am.

Abstract

The GEOMETRIC mesoscale eddy parameterization scheme combines an
energetically constrained version of the well-known Gent-McWilliams
scheme with a parameterized equation for eddy energy. It has been found
that GEOMETRIC can represent the phenomenon of "eddy saturation" in the
Southern Ocean, whereby the zonal transport is observed to be relatively
insensitive to changes in the surface wind stress magnitude.

In this talk I will describe the key physical principles that lead to
this emergent eddy saturation behaviour. The principles will be
illustrated via a simple two-dimensional reduced order model which
yields eddy saturation behaviour at steady-state, and which suggests
dynamical time-scales near steady-state.
