RTG Course: Ocean/Atmosphere Time Series Analysis: Theory and Practice

This workshop will take place 17-28 March 2025 (Monday to Friday)

Title: Ocean/Atmosphere Time Series Analysis: Theory and Practice with Jonathan Lilly
Date: 17-28 March, 2025
Location: Hamburg

Course description:

“Ocean/Atmosphere Time Series Analysis: Theory and Practice” is a two-week course that introduces students to classical as well as cutting-edge techniques for analyzing time series in oceanographic, atmospheric science, and climate applications. Beginning with a solid understanding of the link between time-domain and frequency-domain analyses, we will proceed from simple smoothing, to Fourier spectral estimation, to time-frequency methods such as the continuous wavelet transform. Students are expected to bring a dataset of their own choosing and may participate using either Python or Matlab. A final project will consist of applying the methods taught in the course to the student’s dataset and interpreting the results.
