TRR 181 Seminar "How much resolution is needed for accurate heat transport in turbulent convection? A summary of the main results of M7 phase 2" by Roland Welter (Universität Hamburg)

The TRR 181 seminar is held every other week in the semester and as announced during semester break. The locations of the seminar changes between the three TRR181 locations, but is broadcasted online for all members of the TRR.

The TRR 181 seminar is held by Roland Welter (Universität Hamburg) on April 11, 11 am at Bundesstr. 53, 20146 Hamburg, room 22/23.

How much resolution is needed for accurate heat transport in turbulent convection?  A summary of the main results of M7 phase 2

Abstract

During phase 2, the M7 group has been investigating aspects of turbulence in geophysical flows.  A major focus has been on the heat transport induced by turbulent convection, often modeled via parameterizations in large climate models.  In this talk, I'll summarize some of our main results and findings regarding energetically consistent heat transport in the rotating Boussinesq-Oberbeck model, a paradigmatic model capturing many features of dry, non-hydrostatic atmospheric convection.
