TRR 181 Seminar "Passive scalar mixing: looking for the Batchelor scale" by Camilla Nobili (UHH)

The TRR 181 seminar is held every other week in the semester and as announced during semester break. The locations of the seminar changes between the three TRR181 locations, but is broadcastet online for all members of the TRR.

The TRR 181 seminar is held by  Camilla Nobili (UHH) on December 3, 11am.

Passive scalar mixing: looking for the Batchelor scale

Abstract

I often hear conversation about “mixing” within the TRR181. Although the scientific concept is rather universal, with this talk I will take the opportunity to describe passive-scalar mixing by analyzing a fundamental partial differential equation modeling it. I will go through the problem of defining a good (functional) measure for mixing and then I will state a recent conjecture of Charles Doering and Chris Miles (stated in “Diffusion-limited mixing by incompressible flows”, Nonlinearity 2018) about “convergence to the Batchelor scale”. I will finally sketch my recent result in collaboration with Steffen Pottel connected to this conjecture, relate it to other (numerical and analytical) recent results and describe some open problems.
